What a player prop actually is

A prop is a market on a single player's statistical output — passing yards, receptions, rushing attempts — expressed as a line you take the over or under on. The team's result is irrelevant. A quarterback can throw for 380 yards in a 20-point loss and every over ticket cashes.

The line itself is not a prediction. It is the number the book believes will split the money most evenly. That distinction matters: a line moves because of where the money went, not because the underlying expectation changed.

Reading the price, not just the number

Every prop carries two prices. "Over 62.5 yards at −115" means you stake 115 to win 100. Convert that to an implied probability and you get 53.5%. The under at −105 implies 51.2%. Those two add to 104.7%, and that extra 4.7 points is the book's margin — the vig.

Strip the vig proportionally and the market's honest read on the over is roughly 51.1%. Anyone comparing a fixed-payout product against a real sportsbook number has to do this step first, or the comparison is meaningless.

Where the edge tends to sit

Books price headline markets — spread, total, moneyline — with the most attention and the tightest margins. Props on secondary players get less. That is where lines across different books drift apart, and a gap between two books is the only reliable public signal that a number is soft.

Common questions

Are player props the same as DFS?

No. DFS is a contest where you build a roster under a salary cap and finish against other entrants. A prop is a two-way market on one player. The audiences overlap heavily, but the products and the rules governing them are different.
